- On April 4, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated while standing on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel. Each year to commemorate his assassination the National Civil Rights Museum presents special programming with music, litany or vigil.
Depart OKC 3:00am on 4 April
Rest Stop: Fort Smith, AR
10:00am on 4 April: Arrive at Beale Street Hampton Inn & Suites, 175 Peabody Pl , Memphis, TN38103
12:00pm – the screening of “Citizen King,” a two-hour documentary that explores the last five years of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life through personal recollections and accounts of friends, movement associates, journalists, law enforcement officers and historians.
2:00pm - 5:00pm - Lunch & Tour of National Civil Rights Museum
5:30pm – Evening Commemoration, A program of “Remembrance and Rededication: The Moral Character of Our Nation,” includes a book talk by Rabbi Ben Kamin, who has served over 30 years in senior synagogue and agency positions, published several books, op-ed and magazine pieces about his multicultural and religiously inclusive convictions. Rabbi Kamin’s eighth book Room 306: The National Story of the Lorraine Motel will launch at the museum on April 4th.
Student winners of the Indian Community essay contest who will present their essays on “The Role of Government in Creating a Just and Peaceful Society.”
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Dr. King’s fraternity, will salute him with wreath laying.
Crystal Brown, “The Sax Lady,” will render a musical performance.
Keynote speaker is Dr. Frank Anthony Thomas, a preacher, teacher, scholar, lecturer, author, and coach who is called to preach and teach nationally and internationally
Rev. Jesse Jackson will conclude the program with a special wreath laying on the balcony of Room 306.
9:00am 5 April: Lorraine Motel Room 306 Balcony Experience - stand on the balcony where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assasinated.
12:00pm 5 April Lunch
1:30pm 5 April: Slave Heaven Underground Railroad Museum Tour
4:00pm Depart Memphis, TN
11:00pm Arrive OKC, OK
