Brief de Design Graphique

I am a professional photographer in Anchorage, Alaska. I'm looking for a designer to create a unique, pleasing design for a 12-month (24 pages plus front and back cover) 2016 RETAIL calendar using images of mine of the Anchorage, Alaska area. This is not a promotional calendar. This calendar will be sold to the public in retail stores. So it's more about the calendar & photos than my name. Design must be appealing to the average consumer. The designer would be responsible for completing the entire calendar project to give plate-ready files. We’ll need both the raw InDesign files with links, as well as a PDF to be printed as a proof and submitted to the printer.

Specs for the calendar are:
• one vertical photo on front cover
• back cover
• inside back cover pages x 2
• Grid page for each month
• 12 horizontal photos for the monthly pages based on these specifications:
o Size: 8 7/8” x 12”
o Pages: Front and Back Cover plus 24 pages


Attached are two sample designs, one I like (file name “sample inside good”) and one I don’t like (sample inside bad). The one I like and what I’d want for my calendar is;
• more elegant design than the bad design
• small photo inserted on the grid page
• Unique fonts
• Nice ghosted back design element (sun in this case—which matches the month of July in Alaska)
• A quote

The one I don’t like (bad) is:
• Too much like a block
• Fonts are not very elegant
• Not much in the way of design going on here

I will supply:
• Excell document with approximately 100 dates for holiday’s, moon phases and special days.
• High resolution files of the 13 main images and 12 smaller insets
• Copy for each month including; captions for photos, quotes etc.
• The actual dates for a 2016 calendar

In order for me to choose a designer, what I’m expecting for this initial design is for the designer to offer the following;

1. A design for the cover, using the vertical image of the dog team supplied - and this copy: Anchorage, Alaska & Vicinity 2016 Calendar Photography by Jeff Schultz

2. A design for ONE month on the inside--- ( 2 pages) photo placement, caption, calendar grid, design element, quote, small photo and previous/next month small grid. Do this using the one horizontal photo (airplanes) supplied – and greeking text for the potential copy of the photo caption, quote, etc.

A sample of what I'm looking for the designer to send me to choose their design is in the file labeled: "Cover and Inside Sample" --- the picture of an existing cover & inside of a calendar.

Once I choose the design and designer I prefer, he/she and I will then work together as I supply the rest of the images, dates and copy as mentioned above. Tweaks to be made as we go along. The deadline for the print-ready final, is to be completed by August 15, 2014 -- Once the final complete designs are made and confirmed to work for the printer is when I'll pay the designer the amount pledged.
