Queen’s Crown and Letters Tattoo Design Project
Brief de Design de Tatouage
I’m looking for an original tattoo design based around the letters H M E and a Queen’s crown, with the letter R on it.
The HME letters are the initials of my three daughters. There is also a play on the idea of “Her Majesty’s Empire” .
I would also like a small capital R incorporated into the crown, representing the initial of my wife’s name.
I like the idea of the R being:
inside a small circular detail
part of a jewel or medallion
engraved into the crown band
incorporated through negative space
or handled in another clever way
It should be subtle and feel like it was always part of the crown, rather than something added afterwards.
This is a very personal tattoo, but I do not want the design to feel sentimental, obvious or traditional just for the sake of it. I want it to feel cool, distinctive and genuinely well designed.
I’m still in the exploration phase, so I want designers to go wide. Nothing is off limits stylistically.
Core meaning
The tattoo represents:
my three daughters
family
love
pride
protection
the idea that they are “my queens”
The meaning matters, but I don’t need the design to explain itself to everyone who sees it.
Non-negotiable elements
The design must include:
the letters H M E
a Queen’s crown
The letters should remain recognisable as H, M and E. They can interact, overlap, curve or form part of the composition, but I don’t want them to become so abstract that they are unreadable.
The crown should feel like a Queen’s crown, not a heavy king’s crown.
Creative freedom
I do not want everyone submitting the same design with a different font.
Please explore genuinely different ideas.
The crown and HME can interact in any way that works visually.
For example:
crown sitting directly on top of the lettering
crown covering part of the letters
crown slightly off-centre
crown tilted as though it is slipping or casually resting on the letters
crown sitting on the edge of the H or E
crown centred
crown wrapped around the letters
letters incorporated into the crown
letters becoming part of the structure of the crown itself
HME inside the crown
curved lettering
arched lettering
diagonal lettering
staggered lettering
stacked lettering
loose / flowing composition
compact emblem
asymmetric composition
Those are examples only — please don’t feel limited by them.
Style exploration
I want a wide range of styles.
Ideas worth exploring include:
modern
contemporary
minimalist
fine line
blackwork
elegant cursive
custom calligraphy
luxury / fashion-inspired lettering
hand lettering
brush lettering
street art
graffiti-influenced
streetwear / street-luxury
cartoon
playful graphic
tattoo flash
Art Deco
engraving / etched
vintage sign-writing
crest / insignia
geometric
abstract
bold typography
serif
script
serif/script hybrids
modern emblem design
I am particularly interested in seeing unusual custom lettering, rather than simply choosing a standard font.
Typography
The typography is very important.
I want designers to explore very different ways of drawing HME.
The letters do not need to sit in a straight horizontal line.
I’m open to:
curves
sweeping strokes
different letter heights
unusual baselines
asymmetry
flourishes
compressed lettering
wide lettering
strong bold forms
very refined forms
However, the letters should still read as HME without requiring an explanation.
Crown
Please explore different Queen’s crown styles as well.
It could be:
very refined and fine-line
traditional but modernised
minimal
ornate
stylised
graphic
cartoon-like
street-art influenced
hand-drawn
angular
rounded
asymmetric
slightly imperfect
very contemporary
The crown does not need to sit neatly above the HME.
In fact, I’m particularly interested in interaction between the crown and the lettering.
Colour
My current instinct is black ink, but I want to explore.
Please feel free to show concepts using:
black only
black and grey
subtle shading
very restrained colour
deep red / burgundy
dark blue / navy
muted gold / bronze tones
another accent colour if you think it adds something
I would prefer colour to feel considered and sophisticated rather than bright for the sake of it.
Overall feel
Words that describe what I’m looking for:
cool
personal
distinctive
premium
confident
stylish
timeless
modern
meaningful
original
It can be elegant, edgy, playful, refined or unexpected.
I’m deliberately not trying to define the final style yet.
What I don’t want
Please avoid:
generic clip-art crowns
something that looks like a stock logo
HME becoming impossible to read
an overly obvious “royal crest” unless you have a very fresh take on it
overly busy detail that will disappear as a tattoo ages
designs that look like three unrelated elements stuck together
Most importantly, I don’t want 20 versions of essentially the same crown sitting neatly above HME.
I want different ideas.
Placement
My current thinking is the left side of my chest / heart side.
The tattoo is intended to be quite personal — visible to me, but not something everyone sees every day.
I’m open to placement suggestions if a particular design would work better slightly differently.
Approximate size
Currently thinking approximately 7–10 cm, although I’m open to going somewhat larger if a strong design needs more room.
Because it will be a real tattoo, please consider:
readability
negative space
line weight
how the detail will age
how it will sit on the body
What I’d like designers to submit
I would prefer designers to show one genuinely considered concept rather than lots of minor variations.
If you have a particularly strong idea, showing one or two variations is welcome.
A simple black-on-white presentation is ideal initially.
Body mock-ups are welcome but not essential.
