LOGO DESIGN BRIEF
Festival de Jazz de North Hatley
North Hatley, Québec, Canada
About the Organization
Le Festival de Jazz de North Hatley is a nonprofit organization producing an annual summer jazz festival and occasional year-round concerts in North Hatley and the Eastern Townships of Québec.
Founded in 2025 by local jazz enthusiasts, the festival presents world-class jazz in an accessible, welcoming, and inclusive outdoor setting. As a volunteer-driven organization, we are deeply committed to celebrating live music culture and building community around a shared love of jazz.
Project Objective
The goal of this project is to refresh the existing festival logo to better reflect the unique outdoor setting and spirit of the event — while preserving everything people already love about it: its color palette, its simplicity, and its recognizability.
This is not a full rebrand. Think of it as a thoughtful customization that anchors the logo to its place: the village of North Hatley and the shores of Lake Massawippi.
What Makes This Festival Unique
The Festival de Jazz de North Hatley takes place in one of Québec's most picturesque villages. The concerts are held at a historic music gazebo situated directly on the shores of Lake Massawippi, surrounded by gentle mountains and lush forest. The setting is central to the festival experience — and what sets it apart.
The Scene
• Concert-goers arrive by boat across Lake Massawippi and dock to listen from the water
• Cyclists ride in from the surrounding countryside, leaning their bikes along the lakeside
• The gazebo serves as the architectural and visual heart of every performance
• Mountains and tree lines frame the horizon, creating a naturally cinematic backdrop
This layered, open-air atmosphere — lake, music, mountains, boats, bikes — is what the logo should evoke. Not a concert hall. Not a club. A summer evening by the water, with jazz in the air.
Design Direction
Core Principle
Preserve the existing logo's simplicity and structure. Enrich it with natural elements drawn from the North Hatley setting, so that someone unfamiliar with the festival can immediately sense where it happens.
Elements to Explore
• The Gazebo — the iconic focal point of every concert; a key visual anchor
• Lake Massawippi — water reflections, a shoreline, a sail boat silhouette
• Mountains & Trees — a simple ridgeline or treeline evoking the Eastern Townships landscape
• Bicycle — a subtle nod to the cycling culture of attendees; need not dominate
Design Principles
• Simplicity first — the existing logo works because it is clean; don't overcrowd it
• Natural, not touristy — aim for elegance, not a souvenir-shop feel
• Versatile — must read clearly at small sizes (bike jerseys, programs, social media icons, event signage)
• Community feel — warm, inviting, and approachable
Color Palette
The existing logo's orange and dark blue have strong recognition and should be retained as the primary palette. Red, present in the current version, feels too intense for the relaxed outdoor setting and should be phased out in favor of natural tones.
Swatch Color Hex Role & Notes
Dark Blue #1A2E4A Primary — KEEP. Strong, trusted, anchoring.
Festival Orange #E8771A Primary — KEEP. Warmth, energy, identity.
Lake Blue #5BA3C9 New accent — Evokes Lake Massawippi and sky.
Forest Green #4A7C59 New accent — Represents the mountains and trees.
Note: Red should be avoided entirely. The natural tones of lake blue and forest green better suit the outdoor, community-oriented character of the festival.
Tone & Feel
Outdoor & Natural
Scenic, fresh air, lake breeze, tree-lined. Relaxed & Welcoming
Community-driven, inclusive, unhurried. World-Class Jazz
Prestigious yet accessible, cultured not stuffy.
Practical Requirements
Logo Must Work At
• Small scale: cycling jersey badges, event wristbands, social media profile icons
• Medium scale: concert programs, posters, tickets
• Large scale: event signage, banners, stage backdrop
Deliverables Expected from Designer
• Primary logo (full color, on light background)
• Reversed version (on dark blue background)
• One-color version (for single-color print applications)
• Logo files in SVG, PNG (transparent), and PDF formats
• Color palette and font specifications for brand consistency
A Note From the Team
"We are proud of the logo we have, and our community has embraced it. What we are asking for is a version that, when someone sees it for the first time, transports them immediately to a summer evening on Lake Massawippi — a gazebo lit up with music, boats drifting in from the water, cyclists leaning against the fence. That is the festival. That is what the logo should feel like."
