Brief de Web Design

I am the developer of MarGaudTrains, a railway modelling online shop (https://www.margaudtrains.com) originally developed back in 2004. Today the website needs a complete back-end refresh, which is mostly completed on my side. However I am lacking skills in design, hence my request for support.
The owner of MarGaudTrains wants to modernize the overall design. He wishes to have it sober, modern and responsive. So you have pretty much "carte blanche" in terms of proposal, the only constraint is to keep the logo as is.
Some products can have variants (e.g. a locomotive can be sold in direct or alternating current), as you can see in the screenshot or when navigating his website.
The current navigation with Brand > Scale > Category > Company can remain, however we would want eventually a page with facet navigation that make it easier to search for a specific article.
