**What is Aug?**

Aug is a free tool that creates multiple copies of an original document and randomly distorts each copy for training AI machines. This treatment fabricates realistic documents that appear to have been printed on dirty laser or inkjet printers, scanned by dirty office scanners, faxed by low-resolution fax machines and otherwise mistreated by the real-world paper handling office equipment.

**What makes Aug Magical?**

Why the heck would someone simulate a process to make documents look poorly treated? Great question! And there’s a great reason.

In order to train an artificial intelligence process to read dirty real-world documents, we need both a clean original AND a dirty copy of the document. That way the AI can be trained to understand what the document is supposed to look like before it is all muddied up.

If we only have real world dirty documents, then we don’t have a good way to know for sure what the right answer is when training an AI. By going in reverse, we only train with dirty documents for which we have a perfect original. And that allows the AI to learn to undo all that distortion and restore the document to its original form. It’s pretty much magic!
