Brief de Design de Logo

We have recently established a nonprofit charitable association for marine conservation. Our Association is called Pearls for Oceans. Our members are jewelry and fashion accessory brands and designers from around the world, and pearl farms that sustainably cultivate pearls in the ocean. Our member designers and brands create a collection of jewelry or accessories (handbags, sunglasses etc) which use cultivated ocean pearls, and they donate a minimum of 10% of sales (in some cases they will donate 100%) to our marine conservation initiatives. Our marine conservation initiatives focus on the preservation and restoration of the most fragile ecosystems which also support the most abundant biodiversity - this includes coral reefs, seamounts, bays and estuaries. Our actions focus on establishing marine protected areas with sustainable fishing management by local communities, and the regeneration of coral reefs and habitats through the introduction and transplantation of plants, corals and fish stocks to restore ecosystem balance and have a higher probability to adapt to climate change.A pearl is the only gem that is created by a living organism and only by caring for the marine environment will Mother Nature offer up a pearl from the ocean. Ocean Pearl Farmers must be stewards of the ocean, caring for the marine ecosystems surrounding their farms to avoid pollution and disease from destroying the oysters. It takes 5 years to grow an oyster to an adult that will hopefully deliver a pearl, and the increased threats from climate change - storms, acidifcation, temperature rise and sea level rise - are making ocean pearl cultivation an extremely challenging endeavour. The Pearls for Oceans initiative hopes to raise awareness with consumers about the need to mitigate climate change to slow down these external effects, and for the need to help the adaptation of critical marine ecosystems for their survival. We need a logo that is made up of a graphic symbol and the type face "Pearls for Oceans". The graphic symbol needs to be able to reduce to a 15mm disc and be clearly identifiable. It needs the ability to be either stamped onto a disk, or possibly laser cut into a disk. The symbol could be used as a pendant or as charm on a bracelet. It would also be stamped on the packaging for jewelry and accessories - so imagine a jewelry packaging for a ring or earrings and the symbol would be printed on the lid of the box packaging, or it could be a small label attached to a handbag. This symbol needs to be easily distinguishable in a single color print, but would have color for brochures, stationary and social media. The title "Pearls for Oceans" needs to have a font and layout structure that reflects the luxury sector and which can stand alone or which can be combined with the graphic symbol. When combining with the graphic symbol it is important to consider the layout options. We need to see how the symbol and wording can adjust according to dimensions of the printed object. For example, could Pearls for Oceans encircle the symbol, or do the words do underneath in one or two or three lines, or to the side and in one or two or three lines, and where does the symbol fit in these cases.I hope you will find this an interesting brief to develop a logo which will hopefully come to be internationally recognized for the marine conservation achieved.

  • UPDATE: From the 20 designs I have received so far I notice that there are a few key suggestions that have really helped the designers propose some great designs:
  • 1. The target audience is the jewellery consumer and the luxury consumer. The design needs to reflect the luxury segment.
  • 2. The logo is made up of a symbol and a phrase "Pearls for Oceans", but the two need to be able to exist separate of each other. Imagine a coin, and on one side there is the symbol and on the other there is the phrase "Pearls for Oceans". We need to imagine the symbol being able to exist on its own and to be able to communicate the pearls for oceans initiative.
  • 3. Think of what the symbol would look like on a pendant or a charm on a bracelet. The symbol could be laser engraved, or cut into the pendant, or enameled on. The symbol should therefore be able to stand out just within a one colour scale.
  • 4. The style of the "Pearls for Oceans" phrase needs to sit easily among other luxury brand logos. This suggests that it needs to be artistic, possibly art-deco for example, or flowing and classic.
  • If you imagine a ring box in dark red by Cartier, or a light blue box by Tiffany, then imagine having the symbol on its own imprinted on the lid - would it look right. That is the question, along with the application to the pendant. Each box has a leaflet of the same size as the box, so it would have the logo with Pearls for Oceans on the front page. If someone can be handed the box, and from the symbol printed on the box the receiver can be elated and happy and be in anticipation of the pearl jewellery inside and that they are contributing to saving our oceans - then that is the wonderful effect we wish to achieve.
