Brief de Design 3D
We are working with a local council to upgrade an existing footbridge. The bridge is looking tired and neglected. We have built a 3D model (in sketchup) of the core structure and geometry and want ideas on attractive colour schemes and a new balustrade design (AKA bridge barrier).
WE NEED CREATIVE DESIGNERS!
Any part of the structure can be painted to create an eye-catching colour scheme with your proposed balustrades added. We want a vibrant and creative colour scheme and balustrade design to show to our clients.
There are three types of balustrades required:
TYPE 1: Needs to be a minimum 1100mm high with a handrail at 1000mm high. Balustrade will fix to the outside of the existing timber beams. The balustrade must be non climbable. No gap in the balustrade shall be large enough to pass a 100 diameter ball. Horizontal infill will not be permitted over the first 900mm unless gaps are less than 35mm (so that it cannot be used as a ladder). Possible solutions are stainless steel mesh infills, vertical rods/fins/posts, 45 degree inclined rod/fins/posts, lazer cut panels, and a combination of all of these. Other ideas can be found here: https://www.pinterest.nz/DanCrockerCEng/balustrades/
TYPE 2: (next to railway on ramps) Needs to be a minimum 1800mm high with a handrail at 1.0m high. Balustrade shall fix to the outside of the existing timber beams. It shall have a solid infill for the first 1100mm and the top 700mm can have gaps no greater than 35mm x 35mm. Type 2 should be of a complementing design to Type 1.
TYPE 3: (next to railway on truss) Needs to be a minimum 1.8m high that fixes to the outside (or on top of) the existing truss bridge. It shall have gaps no greater than 35mm x 35mm. Type 2 should be of a complementing design to Type 1.
(the truss bridge will have a simple architectural stainless steel mesh infill to maximize the view of the existing truss which will be painted a vibrant colour of your choice).
Refer to the A4 sheet that shows the extent of these balustrade types. We also need a colour scheme for the truss bridge, and approach ramps that is sympathetic to the balustrade design and colour. All colours should be selected from either the Dulux or Resene colour range which can be added to sketchup here:
https://www.resene.co.nz/comn/services/sketchup.htm
https://extensions.sketchup.com/en/content/dulux-trade-digital-palette-0
TIP #1:Don't worry if you cannot work out the finer details for the balustrade (e.g. bolts and screws). If the concept is creative and clear we can work out the finer details (we are a team of structural bridge engineers).
TIP #2: If you simply want to test whether your balustrade is what we are looking for we would be happy to review and comment on a simple 9m length of Type 1 and 2 (to save you modelling everything in the early stages).
Prior to payment, the chosen designer will need to add the three balustrade types to the model (and modify to suite the slightly varying spans so there are no gaps) so that it is visible in each of the Scenes of the Sketch-up Model.
We will start giving feedback from the 13th September on-wards. If designs start achieving 4 stars we will guarantee payment. We will also consider awarding second and third prizes if the quality of entries is high.
Thanks,
Dan and the DC Structures Studio Team.

Doit avoir
- Vibrant and creative. Must add a "wow-factor" to the bridge.
- TYPE 1 Balustrade:
- 1100mm high
- handrail at 1000mm
- First 900mm must be non-climbable e.g. vertical, inclined, solid or mesh infill are OK. Horizontal bars would be regarded as a ladder that can be climbed.
- TYPE 2 Balustrade:
- 1800mm high
- handrail at 1000mm
- First 1100mm must be solid.
- Top 700mm must have gaps no greater than 35x35 of 50diameter
- TYPE 3 Balustrade:
- Must attached to truss and have similar properties to Type 2.
- All colours selected must be either "Dulux" or "Resene" and listed in the final design.
Bien d'avoir
- Lighting. If this is considered in the submission it would be a bonus.
- High quality modelling renders are not required but would be a bonus.
