Company Name is:
Grant Writing BRIDGE
Domain is purchased:
www.grantwritingbridge.com
Clients:
501c3 or NGO nonprofit organizations seeking to outsource grant writing. I am aiming for mid sized organizations that cannot afford to hire a grant writer nor hire the few large nonprofit consulting firms.
Business Status:
This is a startup business, but I am getting referrals from I believe the MNA or other clients.
Notes:
Name chosen based on a startup website and service by Gates, Google and others that will bring foundations (providing funds), nonprofits and NGOs together in one platform so they can more easily find each other. I am using "bridge" in my business name to have it come up as organizations start searching for the new website: https://bridge-registry.org/. Even without my website launched/hosted I am getting referrals--grant writers are in high demand and being disabled my only choice is to work from home. I have multiple degrees and have the support and guidance of Notre Dame nonprofit/grant writing professors and experts in the sector.
Reason for using "bridge":
I am looking to bridge the gap of nonprofits connecting to funding. I am looking to assist nonprofits in bridging the ability to accomplish their mission statements. Likewise, foundations are required to donate a certain percentage of their portfolio each year. I would also be assisting in finding nonprofits for foundations...another bridge. Overall, I am looking to bridge a gap between these organizations...much as the recently launched website by Gates, Google, HP, etc.
Grant Writer Profession:
Are now considered a new and distinct profession from fundraisers. Few people these days are good writers, can tell a good story, know the details that foundations are seeking when they consider a grant application. It is similar to writing proposal work in the for-profit sector.
Logo Look:
Clean, simple. Two colors, but can also be used in one color where necessary. Completely legible and readable at small sizes (imprint on a pen) or larger applications, cover of a folder and useful at various dpi on a website or email newsletter.
I live in Michigan and would like any graphic of a bridge to resemble the Mackinac Bridge. (https://www.google.com/search?q=images+of+mackinac+bridge&espv=2&biw=1355&bih=1025&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjUvdniyMDQAhXKLyYKHdksAYcQ_AUIBigB&dpr=0.9) Will be using logo for letter head, business card, proposal forms and website. The logo must be professional looking. Fun and cartoony is fine for my clients, but not for my use. The logo does not have to contain a bridge image or graphic if the text conveys the feeling of a bridge or "bridging". If a strong image of a bridge is incorporated into the logo it should be of the Mackinac Bridge.
Grant Focus Areas:
Conservation, education, rare diseases (Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), Mast Cell Activation, POTS, autoimmune diseases), environmentalism, clean water/sanitation in third world nations.
Website:
Will have description of my services (grant writing, logic diagrams, proof-reading grant proposals, providing guidance for less prepared nonprofits/NGOs via blogs posted on the website...which will hopefully drive traffic to the website as content builds up to be a source for information and preparation steps for potential clients.
This is a for-profit business with clients being in the nonprofit/NGO sectors.
FROM MY BUSINESS PLAN:
Mission:
Partner with nonprofit organizations and NGOs to create targeted grant proposals.
Vision Statement:
Bring my extensive and unique experience in the for-profit sector to the transforming nonprofit sector resulting in contracted/engaged local and international nonprofit organizations and NGOs being awarded more funding towards their missions’ goals.
Service Description:
• Write exceptional grant proposals
• Build partnerships with organizations built on trust, added value and successes
• Research potential grants for organizations with a specific defined need
• Write grant proposals
• Proof-read and provide input on grants written by an organization’s staff member(s)
• Create effective process diagrams and logic models for organizations writing their own grant proposals
History and Capabilities:
• An undergraduate degree in graphic design (BFA), a graduate degree in business/marketing (MBA) and three certifications.
• Decades of experience working as a graphic designer, art director and photographer, coupled with over fifteen years working as a functional project manager writing extensive proposals and providing project oversight.
• Decades of hands on volunteer work locally and internationally, including leadership and grant writing roles.
• Passion for leaving the world and its many communities (human, environmental or animal) better than when I engaged with them and in a state of stability and hope.
Competitive Advantage:
• Extensive experience with hands on volunteering, managing volunteers, petitioning for the certification of community habitats, local and international onsite volunteer and consulting work for 501c3 and NGOs in various subject areas (primarily environmental, education, conservation, disabilities and community improvement projects).
• Graphical skills and keen analytical abilities, built over many years in the for-profit sector, allow me to create exceptional logic models--providing clear and accurate visuals necessary to make a grant proposal stand out from the crowd of other qualified and worthy submissions. This unique background also lets me see creative ways of accomplishing a grant proposal or a project that many people don’t have the experience or skill set to identify.
• Good story teller.
• Experience in writing for-profit proposals from $20,000 to $20,000,000.
• Experience in writing nonprofit and NGO partnership grants, and winning.
• Three University of Notre Dame professors with decades of experience providing me with guidance and best practices in my pursuit of building a home-based grant writing business.
• Worked/working with the Detroit Zoological Society (501c3) named the best managed nonprofit by Crain’s Detroit.
Description of Target Market:
Organized and realistic nonprofit and NGO organizations who have a defined project and have identified a specific grant(s). The organization needs to hire a grant writer since there is no grant writer on staff and cannot necessarily afford a large grant writing firm.
Geographic Area of Market:
Local, national and international.
Grant writers are rarely located near a client and most work remotely. An organization can be a registered 501c3 in the United States and have most of its staff located in another country, but need the grant writer to be based in the U.S. for access to funder program managers and submissions.
Buying/Hiring Behavior of Clients:
A nonprofit or NGO organization will hire a consultant grant writer to enhance the organization’s skills and ability to fulfill the organizational mission. Writing a successful grant proposal takes time and a great deal of knowledge, skill and experience. Many organizations attempt to handle the grant writing process in-house with existing staff and often fail. An investment in a professional grant writer will pay off with more grants won and less distraction for an organization’s staff and mission accomplishments.
Finding grant writers is easy. Finding and hiring a good grant writer is more difficult. Good grant writers usually are kept busy by good clients (responsive, prepared for grant process and deadlines) making finding an available grant writer difficult. Many places that organizations look for grant writers is, state or national nonprofit professional groups with listings of (grant writer) members, LinkedIn, running ads on nonprofit job boards or a referral from a colleague or another nonprofit.
Start up or small nonprofits have little to spend on additional staffing needs and are most likely to seek independent grant writers. Particularly if the small staff does not have the skill set to write a compelling grant proposal.
Direct and Indirect Competitors:
• Large foundations*
• Large nonprofit organizations*
• Grant writing firms (offer multiple services, specialists in various subject areas)
• Independent professional grant writers
• Multi-service consultants
*Few companies or organizations keep a full-time grant writers on staff
Benefit and Features of (MY) Services:
Many of the skills needed in the nonprofit sector have been used and perfected in the for-profit business world for decades. My unique background in graphic design, art direction, photography, volunteering, philanthropy, proposal creation and project management allow me to bring for-profit best practices and processes to the transforming nonprofit sector. With an undergraduate degree from the Center for Creative Studies, a graduate degree from Wayne State University, three certifications and an innate ability for analysis, I am able to enhance a grant proposal with compelling stories, engaging logic diagrams and detailed project needs. As an independent freelance grant writer I am able to add value by my depth of knowledge and experience in select topic areas that larger grant writing companies may not have the time or interest to provide.

- Clean, simple. Two colors, but can also be used in one color where necessary. Must be completely legible and readable at small sizes (such as an imprint on a pen) or larger applications (such as a cover of a folder_ and useful at various dpi on a website or email newsletter. Contain entire business name: Grant Writing BRIDGE. Expect complete data on font style, sizes, kerning, colors (CMYK, RGB). Files for web use, printed use. Minimum of 300 dpi for images designated for printing. Files should be in various sizes and perhaps layouts for various uses...one longer version for a pen, more compact for business cards or labels. Layered PSD file in case I need to tweak the image to fit a certain use...maybe a handout at a conference or to clients.
- Will be using logo for letter head, business card, proposal forms and website, so it must be readable from small applications (such as pens, small handout, some invoices or RFPs.)
- The logo must be professional looking. The logo does not have to contain a bridge image or graphic if the text conveys the feeling of a bridge or "bridging". Not neon or super bright colors. Darker tones for professionalism, but willing to see designs with a bright accent if applicable to the design. It is possible that a logo design has more detail/gradation in a color and a version that can be used as a flat black or one color image for simple documents like invoices or RFPs.
