Brief de Design de Logo
The Society of General Physiologists is soliciting designs for a bold but unpretentious logo that has a strong emotional and visual impact. The logo should have graphic elements that represent physiology, either the concept of physiology, the systems we study, or the techniques that we use. A powerpoint file with some ideas is attached.
The Society of General Physiologists, usually referred to as the SGP, is a scientific society founded in 1946 to promote and disseminate knowledge and interest in the subject of general physiology. Physiology is defined as the study of the function of living organisms and their parts. The term “general physiology” refers to the fundamental mechanisms and principles that underlie all of physiology. Key concepts are “function” and “mechanism”. The scale is from whole organisms (from microbes to whales and of course humans) to single molecules (including proteins and DNA). Physiology today incorporates use of modern techniques of physics (including lasers, fluorescent molecule biosensors, electrical measurement of miniature electrical currents, X-ray diffraction), as well as techniques from cell biology fluorescence and confocal microscopy, atomic force microscopy) and genetics (genetically modified animals and cells in culture).
Our website is www.sgpweb.org
Ideally the logo should convey some of the following ideas:
1. The enthusiasm, excitement, forward-thinking nature, and state-of-the art techniques of modern physiology.
2. The core interests of the society – membrane transport, ion channels and transporters, membrane structure, regulation, and dynamics, contractility and molecular motors. Much of what we do bears analogy to machines: we talk a lot about pumps, motors, rotors, antennae, and receptors. Systems we study include nerve, muscle, epithelia.
3. The history of the SGP. We were founded and have our headquarters at the Marine Biological Lab in Woods Hole Massachusetts and still hold our annual meeting there. We have a long-standing relationship with the Rockefeller University Press and the Journal of General Physiology. There is a degree of nostalgia or attachment to the past and the history of physiology. Marine organisms have played a large role in the history of physiology: the squid giant axon, barnacle muscle fibers, fluorescent proteins from jellyfish.
4. The Society characteristics. Small, intimate, and fun (to distinguish from larger scientific societies like the Biophysical Society, the Society for Neuroscience, and the American Physiological Society).
5. The letters “SGP” or the name “Society of General Physiologists”.
Other ideas and thoughts:
I think that explicit incorporation of the 5 points above will make a very busy and distracting logo. We prefer a very simple logo that has an emotional impact without many details.
For colors, a scheme that makes the logo pop.
Mises à jour
Please note that we have converted this project to a guaranteed project, have increased the budget, and have revised the project description to be more explicit what we are looking for.

Thank you to everyone for submitting such excellent designs. We are now deliberating and are narrowing the candidates down to a short list. Over the next few days I will be eliminating designs. We hope to decide by Monday (10/14). Thanks for your patience.

Doit avoir
- The design should be symbolic, conceptual, and simple rather than busy and complicated. It must have graphic elements that relate to physiology, or at least biology.
Bien d'avoir
- We have an open mind, but the illustration should convey the concept of physiology and be "modern". Our present logo and logos used in recent SGP symposia are attached. Images relevant to our field can be found by googling: patch clamp, ion channel, cell membrane, receptors, molecular motors, protein structure. Incorporation of all of these elements will likely make the design too busy, but these diagrams may provide some inspiration for a more stylistic synthesis of these ideas.
Ne doit pas comporter
- Do not mimic the logos of other related scientific societies.
