Poster design for holiday festival of lights in a historic (1910- ) neighborhood of San Diego, California.
Our small historic neighborhood (about 100 years old) near Balboa Park in San Diego is a quiet but quirky, historic, hip and attractive community of single-family residences and independent shops lining tree-lined streets. To bring holiday season attention and visitation, we are staging a month-long festival December 1-31, 2013. Streets, shops, eateries, homes, trees and gardens will be decorated with lights (warm white lights, not blinking). Special events and guided tours will be offered. The festival name is "Luminaria," and this will be the first year of an annual event.
We are seeking design and original illustration/graphics for a poster, to be used like a logo, included on printed posters, postcards, and print advertising. The art may also be used on t-shirts to be given to participating volunteers and merchants. (It is possible that we will employ the winning designer to execute additional graphic projects needed for the event -- street banners, map/handouts, etc. It is to be determined if the artwork used on the poster will be incorporated into those elements.)
We envision a "vintage travel poster" look with the following text included:

The design should cover 75-80% of the poster, with the remaining space allowed for text with specific event dates and messages. So on an 11x17 sheet, the art you are creating would cover 11x14", for example.
Design elements should have a "vintage" or retro style, as the neighborhood's architecture is primarily Craftsman, California bungalows, and similar early-20th century designs. Emphasize lights around homes and in trees and/or lampposts. Some photos of the neighborhood are included with this brief, but there is no single iconic element that brands or identifies South Park. See our website (www.southparkscene.com), which was created 6 years ago, for past graphic style and colors. You may incorporate these colors, or use something completely new. (Plans are for a rebranding campaign, logo, website, etc. to be undertaken in 2014.)
We are hoping to move quickly into production, so I will select a winner as soon as something right appears.
