Brief de Design Illustration

Illustrate a short "Children's Storybook" designed for parents, to raise awareness of the importance of effective parenting. The book will be used in a crowd-funding campaign to raise money to catalog all the parent education resources in Massachusetts. Once cataloged, parents will then be able to use this database to find parenting education programs in their area using a zip-code search on our website. Our work will be national in scope - with Massachusetts being our first state, or beta site.

The story itself has been written. It is about the parents in a "magical kingdom called Massachusetts" who want to be the best parents possible, but realize that it is not always easy, and often struggle. They seek out the local wise wizard to help them find "gems" of parenting wisdom that they have heard are hidden throughout the land. It is to be set in an era with wizards and castles. A "once upon a time" setting.

I will share the full story with the winning designer, but below is a section of text which may help serve as a basis to create sample illustrations for your submission.

SAMPLE TEXT:
Once upon a time there was a magical kingdom called Massachusetts. The kingdom was filled with parents and children who loved each other very much, and wondrous places for them to play. There were magnificent beaches, and libraries filled with great stories. There were beautiful woods to hike, incredible museums to play and learn, and fantastic parks. The parents of Massachusetts wanted to be the best parents they could be, and help their children grow into happy, confident, responsible adults.
But the wise parents of Massachusetts discovered a problem. They weren’t always sure how to do that. As wonderful as parenting could be, it was also hard. It was exhausting. It was frustrating. They often felt unsure about what they were doing, and sometimes even felt like terrible parents when they were trying their hardest to be the best.

The brilliant idea for the storybook came from a group of Emerson College Students who, as part of their Non-Profit Fundraising Class, helped create a crowd-funding campaign to raise money to catalog all the parenting education resources in Massachusetts. This class is offered through Emerson's Communications Department and is taught by Cathryn Edelstein.

Thank you for considering this project and I look forward to your submissions.

Doit avoir
  • Colorful inviting images. People of varying genders and ethnicities. Images of many individual parents interacting with many different children - playing, reading, "connecting."
Ne doit pas comporter
  • Pictures of parents and children that exclusively represent traditional nuclear families. I don't want to alienate single parents and non-traditional families.
