::About CPS Lectures (more at cpslectures.com)::
CPS Lectures is a Bay Area salon created by Kelly Close and her husband, John Close. The series honors the memory of Cyril Patrick Shaughnessy, Jr., Kelly’s father, who died in late 2002. CPS loved meaty discussion and took any opportunity he could to learn. These gatherings since his passing have offered friends and neighbors opportunities to learn and gather, and provide a forum where highly regarded entrepreneurs, professors, authors, stay at home parents, those who work with their hands, friends, and other members of the community come, speak, and take part in lively discussion. With over 75 speakers having attended, CPS Lectures "sell out" in days or even hours. CPS Lectures is a socially conscious entity focused on enriching the immediate and peripheral community that makes its existence possible. Our lectures are often outlets for increasing visibility about pressing, relevant social issues and advocacy efforts. At its core, CPS Lectures is about educating the community.
Typically, we expect anywhere from 30 to 70 attendees per lecturer-all of whom are incredibly engaged and curious. We start with local coffee, wine, beer, and dessert and transition into the talk in coordination with the speaker's timetable. The night ends with people staying late talking under our living room disco ball. Copies of your books would be available for attendees, who often line up to have them signed by the author. Our speakers routinely say the evenings are really a wonder.
Speakers can be most broadly be categorized into the following 5 themes: healthcare, public life/politics, technology, education, and food (see cpslectures.com for list of speakers).
::Project Description and Objectives::
CPS Lectures currently has no logo. The color scheme of the logo does not necessarily need to be constrained the match the aesthetics of the CPS Lectures website (cpslectures.com) since the website is undergoing major changes as well. The objective of having a CPS Lectures logo is to communicate visually to the viewer what CPS Lectures values:
• Educational opportunity
• Diversity in educational topics (education, healthcare, technology, politics, food)
• Intellectual curiosity of audience
• Social openness (strangers bonding over their shared interest in an educational topic)
• Classroom atmosphere (lecture is followed by Q&A)
• Talk-show environment (speaker and Emcee sit in couches facing audience)
Specific Expectations
The CPS Lectures Logo should:
• Include the words “CPS Lectures”
• Should not have more than four (4) colors in the logo (keep it simple)
• Simple, clean look
• Bright, exciting, uplifting look
• Stand out from ordinary text
• Exhibit creativity and thought
• Include some sort of symbolic component that will make the viewer think (“What does this have to do with the lecture series/what does this remind me of that is relevant?”)
o See: dolectures.com. Their logo (wordmark style) uses keys as a symbolic component, to suggest that ideas (from the lecture) can unlock new possibilities. Love it.
o See: cityarts.net. Their logo (pictoral logo) has two sofa chairs as a symbolic component, which conveys the setting/atmosphere of the lecture space to the viewer.
