• YouthForce NOLA was launched in summer 2015 as a collaboration between a group of partner organizations fueled by the desire for every high school student to have access to the information, training, and experiences necessary to prepare for high-wage, high-demand careers aligned to our regional industries. Partner organizations include education non-profits, higher ed, K-12 education leaders, community groups, private philanthropy organizations, economic development organizations. This cross-sector initiative to bring greater industry-aligned career technical education (CTE) programming to local high schools is focused on increasing the number of local high school students prepared for success in both college and career. General background on education landscape in New Orleans: New Orleans is viewed as a national leader in the charter school movement and has experienced a wave of education reform post-Katrina. This reform has created a churn of activity around ways of thinking about public education and offered a platform to quickly and efficiently test out new ideas in education.
o YouthForce NOLA Internship Program: YouthForce internship is a collaborative effort including three local non-profits (Educate Now and Juma Ventures, New Orleans Business Alliance ). Launched in summer 2015 as an outgrowth of the larger YouthForce NOLA initiative, the internship program’s goal is to expose local high school students to career opportunities in two of our high-wage, high-growth sectors, bio and tech/IT, through quality internship experiences. YouthForce Internship students receive 60 hours of professionalism training prior to completing a 90 hour summer internship. As these two industries grow and become integral to the New Orleans economy, the exposure afforded through YouthForce Internships builds a stronger pipeline for our local employers, and is an essential component to help build up our human capital to ensure New Orleanians become our city’s biggest assets. This is the first program of its kind in New Orleans to offer internships focused on these growing industries.
