Brief de Design de Logo

Design a logo for the Freedom Fund to be used across communication, marketing and promotional materials.

The logo will be used on printed materials (eg. brochures, leaflets, business stationery), screen and digital applications (eg. websites, apps, videos), and promotional / give-away items (eg. t-shirts, badges / pins, water bottles). It's important that the final solution is suited to these varied applications and can be recreated in full-color, one colour and greyscale versions at various sizes.

It would be acceptable to us to have two versions of the logo - one to use at standard sizes and a simplified one to be used at smaller sizes or in 'difficult' applications (engraving, embroidery, etc).

About the Freedom Fund
The Freedom Fund's vision is to see a world free of modern-day slavery.

The Freedom Fund is the first ever global, private, anti-human trafficking integrated donor fund. The goal of the fund is to initiate a new global abolitionist movement that mobilises significant public interest, raises private capital (US $30M in its first phase) for investment into the best of class anti-human trafficking leadership, programs, research and ideas around the world. At its outset it is the world’s largest grassroots anti-trafficking organisation.

The Freedom Fund's mission is to create a new abolitionist movement that mobilises private resources and energy to bring about a measurable reduction in slavery, trafficking and indentured servitude by the year 2020. We will accomplish this in three principle ways:

1. Mobilise – further resources towards Anti-Human Trafficking (AHT), particularly international AHT

2. Invest:
- - Grass grass-roots clusters of projects in highly affected areas.
- - Data and research
- - Advocacy

3. Learn & Align – help align the community around the most effective approaches.

In simplistic terms, the Freedom Fund will work to secure private donations from high net worth individuals, corporations (through Corporate Social Responsibility or CSR programmes) and foundations. These donations will be used to fund projects and initiatives that work to help victims, fight the causes, and raise international awareness of modern-day slavery and human trafficking.

What is Modern-Day Slavery?
Slavery remains a reality for millions of people around the world today. It is the worst state of poverty: to lack liberty is be deprived of all choice, opportunity and ultimately hope. They exist in silence, hidden and forgotten. These are the voiceless with few aware of their plight or there to advocate for them.

Slavery is a complex problem, often illegal, much of it exists in dark corners far from the rule of law, making information challenging, estimates are therefore imprecise. Those caught in slavery are often from economically challenged communities and suffer all of the issues of poverty: disease, a poor education, addiction and ignorance of the law. Without work, many are more vulnerable to exploitation.

Since the early 19th Century there has been a concerted global effort to abolish slavery in all its forms. Great progress has been made aided by more better governance, the rule of law and the growth of international institutions as well as substantial economic growth in many parts of the world, particularly over the past 30 years. There now exists an extensive coalition of organisations, governments and bi-lateral institutions dedicated to bringing about an end to slavery.

However, despite these gains, slavery remains a reality for too many. We believe the time has come for a new abolitionist movement. One that will highlight the plight of millions caught up in this industry, mobilises greater resources and brings greater coordination and cooperation to the space.

• Modern Day Slavery generates $32 billion for slave owners
• It is estimatedthat there are 21 million in modern day slavery. Highest estimate 27 million
• Slave labour contributes to at least 122 types of goods in at least 58 countries

“It ought to concern every person, because it is a debasement of our common humanity. It ought to concern every community, because it tears at our social fabric. It ought to concern every business, because it distorts markets. It ought to concern every nation, because it endangers public health and fuels violence and organized crime. I’m talking about the injustice, the outrage, of human trafficking, which must be called by its true name – modern slavery.”
President Barack Obama, September 2012

Thanks to everyone that''s submitted a design, so far there are some very interesting and varied submissions.

We don''t want to start giving too much specific individual feedback yet as we''d still like to see some more creative designs without influencing peoples ideas.

Please read the brief carefully and take special note of the following points:

The design should be impactful and iconic
The design should be immediately identifiable as relating to the issue of international modern-day slavery rather than any other type of slavery
The design should work with and without the tagline

Try to avoid typical slavery / freedom stereotypes / cliches such as shackles, ''ball and chains'' or doves

Thanks to everyone that's submitted designs so far. We've started the huge task of looking through the designs and trying to refine a few of the ones we like, which will continue over the next couple of days. If you have new ideas, or refinements of ones you've already submitted, then please keep posting them up.

There have been many more submissions than we expected and editing down to a shortlist is taking a long time. Apologies if any of your designs have been eliminated without a full explanation of why we didn't feel they were right.

  • Although we won't completely rule out a text only style logo, we are interested in having a device, image or symbol that was strong and unique enough to stand alone from the words 'Freedom Fund'. For example, the Nike 'swoosh' or the World Wildlife Fund's panda.
