Drawing became a way to stand out in crowded boomer classrooms. When unicorns and rainbows failed to bring the desired accolades, a quick doodle of his Grade 4 French teacher with a frog's body garnered some quick attention. Doodling was just a past-time until he found himself successfully capturing the quick ticket to fame and fortune a B.A. in English brings, and realized that that, plus 4 years of experience working in the student bar designing "Buck-A-Beer" night posters and checking I.D.s, didn't even send him to the front of the line at the Ministry of WhatamIgonnadonow? After then completing a two-year graphic design course at prestigious Algonquin College, Woodroffe Campus, Portable G, and drawing editorial cartoons for the radical Algonquin Times newspaper, he received "The Call"… …from the art director of 'A Big City Newspaper'. In 1987, when asked by the paper’s art director if he knew anything about these 'new-fangled computers', he astutely replied "Yes". If only he had bought shares in Apple the first time he sat down in front of one, he could be drawing cartoons from the comfort of his mortgage-free, suburban mansion right now and not even having to worry about commuting down the pothole strewn concrete of our major thoroughfares. During his 25-plus year career as a graphic artist, he has been awarded several Society of Newspaper Design Awards and he was twice nominated for National Newspaper Awards for his cover art on the late, lamented Sunday Weekly section ( "It's an honour just to be nominated. Really." ) Today, he happily continues to draw his Grade 4 French teacher with a frog's body. hide
