An early stage start-up with the aspiration to disrupt a drug discovery model needs a logodesign*

Dear designers,
let us remind you that we are an early-stage start-up with the aspiration to disrupt a drug discovery model. We have founded the company in Brno, Czech Republic/ Central Europe, the place where Mr. Mendel has been born and lived 200 years ago. We would like to build on Mendel's legacy, the founder of the modern science of genetics, by employing a multidisciplinary approach, experimenting, and providing elderly patients the attention they deserve.
We have identified 4 approaches to set the red lines for our logo design.
- unique typography or,
- distinguished monogram or,
- Life Sciences inspired logo or,
- any other modern logo using the pictorials, symbols, and abstracts.
On Saturday we have communicated to you an additional brief where we have mentioned do's and don'ts for the final logo design. Today we would like to highlight the importance of simplicity, differentiation, and being authentic.
1) SIMPLICITY
- as a pharmaceutical company, we are obliged to display our logo at the box, patient information leaflet and some companies go even further and communicate it on each pill/ tablet as well. That requires that a logo is simple to be displayed in various situations. (mostly white background, black&white or color&white)
2) DIFFERENTIATION
- it is mission-critical that the logo stands out. Imagine the situation that patient is taking multiple medicines and therefore is critical to differentiate symbols to avoid any confusion. We aspire to treat elderly people, so the combination of differentiation and simplicity is a must!
3) BEING AUTHENTIC
- over the last two decades, Global life expectancy increased by 5.5 years, the fastest rate since the 1960s. Scientists are making progress in tackling diseases associated with aging leading to meaningful discoveries and a better understanding of mechanisms connected with long life.
- our mission is to focus on increasing the health span, not only the life span by shifting from a disease-management system to a preventive medicine system
- that brought us to the concept of LONGEVITY. After searching we have identified several symbols related to longevity and some of them are listed in the 2nd brief.
Today we have uploaded a sketch on one of them - A Celtic symbol that combines HEALTH and LONGEVITY. The sketch is in multiple colors and a certain font, but we hope it is just for inspiration and definitely not intended as a limitation.
We kindly invite you to PLAY WITH THE COLORS, keep it SIMPLE (e.g. 2-3 colors), use gradient and/ or 3D. The choices are up to you. (I have selected red, blue, green, and yellow colors to point out the individual parts of the logo, e.g. BLUE is a monogram from Mendel, red and yellow elements represent longevity (or DNA), blue and green stands for health, red might also symbolize arrow, etc.)
We would like to see a DNA helix (yellow and red part), and a letter M (blue part) - eg by using bold lines and/ or bright colors. Please consider the helix to be shown in different or in the same color. Lines are sharp, but feel free to use curves to display DNA and a letter M. Another tip is to combine lines with dotted lines. Options are simply unlimited. In addition, please think about the font in Mendel Therapeutics.
Last, but not least, we are not Google, but a pharma/ biotech company and we wanted just to inspire your creativity.
Finally, let me remind you that we are open to any other creative idea that represents the information in the brief. We have identified other 3-4 designs which are not at all related to Longevity symbols but reflect well Mendels' connection to life sciences, in particular, genetics, care for people, and a combination of M and T anagrams.
Best regards,
Mendel Tx team
Dear designers,
over the last week, we have received more than 150 logo designs. On Thursday we have communicated key principles for Mendel Therapeutics: simplicity, differentiation, and being authentic. In addition, we have provided you with a hint on logo design such as monograms, typography, and life-science inspired logos. Moreover, we gave an example/ the sketch on a longevity symbol. The provided guidance seems to be productive as each day we are receiving stronger and stronger proposals. Nevertheless, we have decided to prolong the deadline to Thursday, January 14th.
Today we would like to give you a tip on COLOR(S). As communicated earlier our aspiration is to discover medicine that will improve mental health disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease and Epilepsy. The common consensus (see briefing documents) is that the color of awareness ribbons for these diseases is PURPLE. Note: There are other colors related to mental health/ brain disorders, so this guide is not limited to PURPLE ONLY).
The purple has a special meaning when discussing Mendel, the founder of genetics. He crossed pea plants that varied in flower color. PURPLE flowers were found to be the dominant trait over white flowers. (Note that in terms of seeds, yellow seeds were dominant over green seeds).
Let me invite you to revisit the brief as well as public messages below. We are confident that in the coming days we will identify the winning concept that meets high standards for logo design, color, and font.
We are looking forward to collaborating with you and providing the feedback that will help the best one to cross the finish line.
Best regards,
Mendel Therapeutics team
